We've got a few tips and tricks up our sleeve for a successful photoshoot (or at least an attempt at one)! Wrangling the family to capture the elusive 'perfect Christmas Card Photo' can be challenging, especially with young children. Hopefully, some of these can help!

First off, there is no perfect Christmas card photo. The magic is in the memories you and your family make during such a festive season. One day, you'll look back on capturing family moments, so GO EASY ON YOURSELF! Seriously!

Choose a Great Location

No matter where you live - cold and snowy or dry and warm - think of a place that's convenient for your family and has good light. Chances are, your house or yard is the perfect backdrop. Some other options are:

• Snowy parks
• Christmas Tree Farms or lots
• Festive decorations in your city's downtown area

Hire a Photographer or DIY

Nowadays, our phones have excellent cameras built right in. You can just as quickly set up a tripod, set a timer and take family photos yourself.

Choosing the Day and Time for Photos

Go ahead and schedule the best time to get the photos. If you're shooting outside, be sure to get the timing right with the outside light.

If your kids are younger, be sure to choose a time when all the kids are happy (after naps, post naps, etc)

Must Have Shots

If you want any props for your photos, be sure to have those readily available. Some photographers will have extra things like that already—things like wrapped gifts, candy canes, stockings, reindeer antlers, Santa hats, etc.

• The usual - everyone facing and smiling at the camera
• Laughter - capture genuine moments of joy

Why Is This Important?

Halloween can be a tricky time for families managing food allergies. Many traditional Halloween treats aren't safe for children with life-threatening food allergies. The Teal Pumpkin Project is a simple way to make trick-or-treating safer and more inclusive for one in 13 children with food allergies.

Placing a teal pumpkin on your doorstep signals that, besides candy, you offer nonfood trinkets and safe treats for all trick-or-treaters. It keeps Halloween a fun, positive experience for all!

The Heart Behind The Teal Pumpkin Project

Around 1 in 13 children has a food allergy. Halloween, while exciting, can become challenging for parents and kids. Certain types of candy might contain nuts, dairy, soy, or wheat - common allergens that pose a threat to many children. The Teal Pumpkin Project ensures that all kids can participate in Halloween trick-or-treating without being left out of all the fun.

Choosing the Right Nonfood Treats

It's not just about avoiding food; it's about ensuring that every treat is safe. When selecting nonfood treats, remember:

Some nonfood items, like certain brands of moldable clay, can contain food allergens like wheat. Be sure to read labels on things.

Opt for latex-free items. Just as with food, some children have allergies to latex.

Can I Still Pass out Candy?

Of course! Absolutely! This is just a reminder that not all kids can tolerate certain foods and have allergies that can cause them to be very sick!

The point of the Teal Pumpkin Project is to make it so that every child can participate in trick-and-treating without worrying about an allergy holding them back. You can keep things safe by putting food treats in one bowl and nonfood treats in another.

The Navigation Center is located here in Charleston, SC. The Navigation Center takes a multi-faceted approach to helping those who are unhoused or at-risk of becoming unhoused. Each person is unique and faces individual challenges that require person-centered solutions. With their nonprofit serving as a central hub, they're able to connect each family or individual with resources to help address their situation. They're coalition of providers works together to ensure positive outcomes for those we serve.

Staggering Homeless Statistics

• Families - Nearly 25% of our clients are homeless with family with 75% being homeless at time of intake.
• Mothers - Over 330 of our clients are single mothers, including dozens who are experiencing domestic violence.
• Children - More than 900 children are served by The Navigation Center

As everyone knows, Charleston is BEAUTIFUL in every way.  We're fortunate to live here year-round and enjoy everything it has to offer.  Our team recently headed out to beautiful Sullivan's Island for a beach sweep for our monthly SGK Gives Back.

Unfortunately, people litter along our beaches which is (obviously) a big no-no.  When and if trash ends up in the ocean, marine life can end up consuming it which can cause harm or death.  The solution is to just NOT litter.  It really is as easy as walking a few extra feet to one of the trash cans on the beach.

So we decided to make a day of it and hit the beach to pick up as much litter and trash that we could find.  We all realize how lucky we are to live here and want to do our part in keeping our beaches looking great and safe for all sea life.

Why Did You Choose Pima Cotton?

Peruvian pima cotton is one of the softest fabrics out there. When thinking about what we would want our babies to be dressed in daily, this was it. It is hypoallergenic, lightweight, durable, long-lasting, and helps regulate temperature- all the things you want when looking for baby clothes.

I have worked for Shrimp & Grits Kids going on 12 years! Wow it is crazy to say that. Straight out of college I worked for Megan and Pitts in our little Old Village Mt. Pleasant, SC shop on Pitt St. From then the company has grown into what it is today and it is amazing to see.

We're creating a "Little Library" that will be open to all to utilize.  It will be housed at our Mt. Pleasant store location where little library goers can select a book to borrow anytime.  After your little bookworm has finished reading the book, they can bring it back to borrow another.

Postpartum Support Charleston - Month of April

The month of April, our focus is on Postpartum Support Charleston.  As they say, "It takes a village" but sometimes even that doesn't feel like enough after you've just had a baby.

Postpartum Support Charleston, founded in 2000, supports mothers across the Charleston Tri-coutry area struggling with maternal mental illness such as postpartum depression and anxiety. 

Through their extensive moms-for-moms network, connection to diverse mental and physical health expertise and genuine empathy, Postpartum Support Charleston is uniquely positioned to help mothers move into motherhood. 

Diaper Drive and Care Package Delivery

Beyond Delivery, a program of Postpartum Support Charleston, provides Charleston area moms with a meal, care package and information on how to access support and resources provided by PSC. 

During the month of April, we'll be running a diaper drive and delivering these diapers to new moms and we need your help.

Anyone who brings a package of diapers in (size 1’s preferred) will get 50% off 1 item.  If you bring in 2 packages, you'll receive 50% off 2 items. if you bring in 3 packages, you'll receive 50% off 3 items, so on and so forth.  These diapers will be donated to PSC to be added to those care packages for moms in need.

We'll also be signing up to deliver these packages to new moms, and you can sign up to help with that, too!

Walk for Water - Water Missions

In 2006, Walk for Water was created to simulate the trek women and children make every day to collect water. 

• Water Mission is a Christian engineering nonprofit that builds safe water, sanitation, and hygiene solutions in developing countries and disaster areas.
• They've provided safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) solutions in 57 countries and have over 400 staff members working around the world in permanent country programs.
• They work closely with permanent country programs to design safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) solutions for communities located in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Liv, daughter of Justin and McKenzie Suiter, is an incredibly special little girl, who just happens to have Down Syndrome. As you can see from her bigger than life smile, Liv lights up any room she enters. She works hard at her therapy all week, but when it's time to relax, her very favorite things to do are hang out with her big sister Leighton, and EAT! Please note: she loves most any food! (What in the world is your trick McKenzie and Justin?!)

This wonderful family wants us all to know that despite being born with Down Syndrome, Liv is just like any other child. She may take a bit longer to reach those developmental milestones, but she will get there - she's a determined and big personality in a tiny little body! 

Every day Liv is so excited to come home from therapy and show off her new learned skills to those in her family and community! 

As mom McKenzie said, “Many people think Down syndrome is this dark scary thing and it is our hope to show everyone how completely wrong that is! Anyone who has ever met Liv can attest to the light that shines from inside of her. She, and Leighton, are the joy of our lives.”

At 18 months old, Sarah Foster was diagnosed with Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes like her mother, Mindy. Mindy has helped Sarah navigate this diagnosis, and guided her daughter through living with Diabetes and all that comes with it. 

The Foster's church and community helped raise money through local fundraisers, dinners, and donations to adopt a service dog for Sarah - trained to help her monitor her blood sugar and keep her safe and sound.

After 10 months of training at a facility in Nevada, Dougie joined Sarah, Eden, Stan, & Mindy as part of the Foster family in August of 2020.

Even though Dougie was tasked with monitoring Sarah's blood sugar, he started paying extra attention to Eden - Sarah's older sister. Dougie stressed over Eden so much that Stan thought they should test Eden's blood sugar just to be sure.

Dougie to the rescue!!!! Eden's blood sugar was dangerously high.  

Eden has since been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes like her sister and mom, and Dougie has certainly received extra cuddles and treats for his heroic efforts to keep his girls safe!

Now all three Foster ladies are living life with Diabetes and sharing their Type 1 journey together - and with Dougie.

SGK rep, Andrea Dennis shared that her brother, Wes, and nephew, Calvin wore their matching Mullet Swim trunks all summer long. Being close to water was always a special place for Wes, and he and Calvin matched while on the boat with Christine (wife) and Mollie (daughter), on vacation with their extended family, basically any time they could. Calvin was able to share in all of these activities that meant so much to his dad, and could model himself after Wes - an incredible father, husband, brother, & man.  "Anyone who knew Wes, knew that he was loving, happy and outgoing. Wes was a devoted father and an avid athlete.  He had an immense passion for his children and was always a source of joy. He was a faithful servant who had a strong relationship with the Lord, and was involved in many church and leadership activities."

Tragically, Wes passed away from a sudden heart attack on January 4th of this year. When it came time for Christine to pick a suit for Wes to be buried in, Calvin suggested the Mullet Swim suit that he had spent this past summer in making all of those cherished memories with his father. Mollie agreed that her father would have loved to wear the bathing suit, backwards hat and sunglasses - his favorite "suit" attire.

And that is exactly what Wes is buried in.

To match, Calvin also wore his "suit", and backwards hat to the funeral to be just like his awesome Dad. While maybe not the most traditional funeral attire, to two children who have just lost their father, it was the perfect way to honor Wes, and the life-long memories they shared as a family.

Shrimp & Grits Kids wanted to forever mark Wes, Calvin, Mollie, Christine, and Andrea by dedicating our first full family matching collection to the inspiring Alexander family. We hope you'll think of Wes and Calvin, and the amazing memories that can be created through time spent with family whenever you wear them.

It has been a little over a year since then three year old, Eliza Cate Volousky was diagnosed with Leukemia. She was playing in the backyard and fell on her bottom as any three year old is prone to do. A few days later, Eliza Cate's mother, Cadence, noticed that she had not been able to shake that fall off like all the others. Her toddler was still in pain as the week went on, and Cadence took Eliza Cate to see her Pediatrician on January 6th. That doctor referred her to MUSC Children's Hospital in Charleston, SC, where she was x-rayed and tested, and after given a bone marrow biopsy on January 7th, diagnosed with cancer. Cadence reflected that,"Words cannot describe the absolute gut wrenching feeling we had as parents.  So many questions, so many emotions, how could this happen to our baby girl.  How could our healthy 3 year old have Leukemia?"

A year later, and Eliza Cate is a tiny, determined, now FOUR year old Fighter. She has about a year left of treatment and continues to do well, and her whole family and community are thankful for that. She loves her Bitty Baby, riding bikes with her family, and checking out all the sea life at the South Carolina Aquarium!

To show their support, Eaglewood Retreat, the James Island neighborhood of Eliza Cate's grandparents, organized a blood drive in her honor.  41 neighbors and friends donated blood and contributed €820 to the Charleston chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society  

Shrimp & Grits Kids will be supporting Eliza Cate and others battling Leukemia by donating a portion of our sales for BOTH our Serendipity Sail Away AND our Classic Nantucket Sailboat collections to the Leukemia Cup Regatta - benefitting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Happy Holidays!  To celebrate the Season of Giving our featured story for December is centered around Blessing Bags!  Inspired by Lyla Gray, Megan Hewitt's daughter, and her class project, our team came together to make these thoughtful care packages for those in need - continued below, we've provided a list of essential items for you to make these for members of your own communities!

During the month of November, Lyla Gray and her 7th grade classmates were truly inspired by acts of selflessness, and helping others in their surrounding area. They each thought of ways to help those less fortunate, and really focused on benefiting others and how they could continue these efforts in their everyday lives.  One of the most impactful projects that they took part in was building Blessing Bags, or care packages, for homeless individuals they might encounter on any given day.

Each student volunteered to bring 20pcs of an essential item to place in each Blessing Bag. Blessing Bags included:

Small Hair Brush
Toothbrush
Toothpaste
Deodorant
Mouth wash
Tissues
Shampoo
Conditioner
Beanie/sock hat
Sunscreen
Bug spray
Mints/cough drop
Snack(two items)
Mask

Lyla Gray was so inspired, that she encouraged our team to also build these care packages! With consideration to just how many individuals are struggling during these difficult times, our SGK team reflected on how fortunate we are to have the opportunity to give back. With a festive touch, Megan expressed that not only would our SGK Blessing Bags be focused on providing necessary items, they would also bring some holiday joy to those receiving them by being gifted in Stockings!

Once complete, each team member walked away with a few Blessing Bag Stockings to keep in their vehicles - at the ready, so that upon meeting someone in need, they could easily spread this special blessing! 

We are excited to share this special uplifting project with all of you, and we hope that this will inspire some creative acts of giving in your own lives! 

Welcome to our new and improved blog, Grits N Gratitude! We are so excited to launch a new blog with an awesome new mission.  Each month, we will introduce you to an amazing and courageous little hero. These amazing young people are doing great things and showing such strength, and we want to let you know all about them.  We will tell their inspiring stories, and also shower them with an awesome swag bag full of their favorite things each month!  Our mission is to inspire you all through the stories of these beautiful souls' strength, perseverance and love.  Our first blog is about a very special hero, and we cant wait to introduce you all to her! Meet Anne Marie Calligas...

Anne Marie Calligas, the five-and-a-half-year-old daughter of S&GK Sales Rep Catherine Calligas, is so very excited to be the first Grits N Gratitude Hero of the Month! Anne Marie was born prematurely on February 24, 2015, after an extremely complicated pregnancy. The myriad of health issues she was born with included congenital heart defects, hypertension, and kidney and respiratory problems. She also suffered an IVH (bleeding in the ventricles of the brain) while in the NICU, and all these issues followed her home.

Over the last five and half years, Anne Marie has become all too familiar with being admitted for lengthy inpatient hospital stays, even needing to be flown to a children’s hospital via Life Flight once. Despite these repeated hospitalizations and having regular appointments with a team of specialists, Anne Marie has remained a feisty, determined child with a fighting spirit and a giving heart. In June of 2020, she was diagnosed with an exceedingly rare disease that there are only a few dozen other known cases of worldwide - the Abernethy Malformation. This is a vascular anomaly where an individual is born with no portal vein in their liver. The portal vein is responsible for transporting blood brought from the stomach, intestines, and other parts of the body directly into the heart and lungs, but more importantly, the portal vein removes toxins from the blood before it enters the heart. Without one, Anne Marie’s blood was contaminated and bypassing her liver completely before entering her heart. She maintained extremely high ammonia levels in her blood that went undetected for years until her diagnosis and were responsible for a wide array of medical and developmental symptoms.

In the midst of a pandemic, Anne Marie traveled from her home state of Alabama with her parents and older sister Isabel to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago to see Dr. Riccardo Superina - who Anne Marie calls “Dr. Superman” - for a series of extremely complex surgeries to form a portal vein for her liver. Lurie Children’s Hospital is one of only two centers in the world, and her surgeon one of only a handful worldwide, with the expertise to treat and perform these lifesaving procedures.

Anne Marie arrived at Lurie’s on August 17 and remained inpatient for almost six weeks. After discharge, she remained in Chicago with her family and became a patient at Shirley Ryan Ability Lab, a rehabilitation hospital that specializes in treating patients who need therapy following long term hospitalizations.

Because Anne Marie was on a ventilator for almost a month, she needed to relearn even the most basic tasks, like walking, and has been in intensive physical, occupational, speech, and feeding therapy since the last week of September. Tiny but mighty, she dropped down to 24lbs at one point, but with hard work and a lot of prayers she is scheduled to return home at the end of this week, coinciding perfectly with the launch of Grits N Gratitude!

Anne Marie has always preferred the softer knits of the S&GK Serendipity line, so she (and her sister) are THRILLED to see this new launch of girls shirts and leggings that inspire strength, kindness, and gratitude, three things Anne Marie has been surrounded by for the last several months.

After three months of living in the PICU and a hotel, the Calligas family is eager to return home with a healthy Anne Marie, and so grateful for the support they have received from family and friends, medical professionals, therapists, complete strangers who read her story, and the S&GK family.

Anne Marie’s story has been featured in local newspapers in Alabama as well as the Chicago Tribune and the Lurie Children’s Hospital blog.

S&GK is excited to send Anne Marie a Hero’s gift basket with her favorite things to thank her for her heroism that has inspired us all!

Winter is here! I love designing Winter because I love the holiday season and the Winter line is all about the holidays!

This year I brought back a sweet nativity line because we are celebrating the birth of Christ first and foremost.

I absolutely love a classic Christmas plaid, so this season I designed a very rich red and green holiday plaid that has something for everyone in the family. I know most families love to match, so this line has you covered from baby to big kid.

I added a classic white smocked bishop and set with scallops along the bottom to add a little something special. 

I paired the classic bishop and set with a sweet candy cane red windowpane plaid. It is perfect for a sweet Christmas look and of course I had to add some knit twirl dresses for your twirly girls.

Since we are hanging around home a lot more this year, I added a whole smocked Christmas line in knit with the cutest knit Santa sleigh dress, bubble and even an all knit set for boys.

I like to throw in a fun winter collection that is not holiday too, and this season it is my favorite!

The Hampton plaid and floral are the most beautiful combination of cornflower blue and navy that is to die for! I wanted to add something this winter that could be paired with our fall staples, so it pairs perfectly with all our fall navy pieces.

Over the years, I have received tons of requests for family pjs, so this is the Winter of matching pjs! I found the SOFTEST fabric and styles that have the whole family covered from pjs to gowns.
